Seattle Reign FC recently made a significant announcement that resonates deeply within the women’s soccer community: they have signed U.S. women’s national team forward Mia Fishel to a multi-year contract lasting through the 2029 season. This strategic move involved a transfer fee to Chelsea, where Mia had spent the past two seasons, underlining the high expectations surrounding her talent.

Head coach Laura Harvey expressed her enthusiasm for the addition, stating, “We’re absolutely thrilled to bring Mia into our squad. She’s a forward with world-class potential who’s already accomplished so much in her young career.” That’s high praise, and it reflects the exciting potential Mia brings to the Reign. Her ability to dismantle defenses and finish from various angles makes her a formidable addition, and fans can’t help but feel a rush of anticipation to see her in action.

For those who might not be familiar with Mia’s journey, she’s already made a mark on the international stage. After three appearances with the senior U.S. women’s national team, including a memorable debut on September 24, 2023, where she also netted her first goal against Colombia, she has proven to be a rising star. Not just limited to senior play, Mia has a rich history in youth national teams, winning three Concacaf championships at the U-15, U-17, and U-20 levels. Back in 2020, she was even nominated for the U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year, sharing the limelight with other talented players like Naomi Girma and Trinity Rodman.

However, like many athletes, Mia faced a significant setback in February 2024 when she suffered a torn ACL during training for the 2024 CONCACAF W Gold Cup. A devastating injury for anyone, it required an arduous 13 months of rehabilitation before she was ready to hit the field again. On March 23, 2025, she made her return with Chelsea, appearing in four league matches. While she finished her time at Chelsea with two goals in 14 appearances, it was clear that she had not fully regained her pre-injury form.

Mia’s recent training with the U-23 national team during the May to June international break reflects her ongoing effort to get back into the competitive fray. Head coach Emma Hayes made it clear that while Mia could have been sitting on the bench with the senior team, the real value lay in gaining experience through play.

Her college career at UCLA saw her find the back of the net 32 times and assist on 14 goals, earning her All-American honors. When she entered the professional ranks, she was drafted 5th overall by the Orlando Pride in 2022. Yet, instead of joining the Pride, she chose to make a splash in Liga MX Femenil with Tigres, where she quickly established herself as a top player, winning the Golden Boot as the league’s top scorer for the Apertura season. After amassing impressive stats in Mexico, she made the leap to Chelsea in 2023, contributing to the club’s successful campaigns, but struggled to gain consistent minutes due to injuries.

Now, joining Seattle Reign FC is not just a career move; it’s a critical step in her comeback story. “I’m incredibly excited to sign a long-term contract in the NWSL and take this next step in my career with Seattle Reign FC,” Mia stated. She is eager to contribute to the league she praises as one of the best in the world.

The confidence Seattle shows in Mia is highlighted by the length of her contract, making her the most secured player on their roster. General manager Lesle Gallimore noted Mia’s impressive potential, viewing this transfer as a pivotal part of her return to form.

Discussions had previously hinted at Mia exploring other NWSL options as she sought more playing time to help solidify her position on the national team ahead of the 2027 World Cup. Seattle may be in a crowded field themselves, with several talented forwards already on the roster. However, Mia’s agility and goal-scoring prowess make her a critical asset, complementing the current players, including USWNT and NWSL veteran Lynn Biyendolo.

As excited fans consider where Mia will fit within Reign’s structure, they might recall her early affinity for a more central role. Yet, she has the versatility to adapt, adding depth to an already strong lineup.

With training just around the corner, fans are looking forward to seeing her in camaraderie with fellow players during upcoming friendlies against Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds and the Portland Thorns. As the Reign gear up for NWSL competition again on August 1 against Angel City, Mia’s presence is set to add a spark that could make this season one to remember.

This signing carries a narrative steeped in resilience and potential, presenting an exciting chapter not only for Mia but for Seattle Reign FC and their supporters. The upcoming season holds promise, and as players like Mia continue to evolve, they remind us of the unwavering spirit of athletes who embrace both the challenges and victories of the sport they love.
