Italian club Juventus kicked off their Serie A season with a solid 2-0 victory over Parma earlier this Sunday. Amidst the excitement of the match, which saw Canadian international Jonathan David make a notable entrance with a goal in the 59th minute, and Dusan Vlahovic sealing the win with an 84th-minute strike, an unfortunate incident overshadowed the festivities.
Weston McKennie, a key player for the US Men’s National Team (USMNT) and a member of Juventus, was brought on late in the game to replace Kenan Yildiz. However, instead of focusing solely on the match, McKennie found himself the target of racial abuse from fans seated in the away section of Allianz Stadium while he was warming up on the sidelines. This troubling news was confirmed by the club through an official statement.
In their release, Juventus stated, “This evening, at the end of the match against Parma, Weston McKennie was subjected to discriminatory racist remarks by some individuals in the away section while he was training on the pitch with his teammates who had not taken part in the game.” Such incidents are deeply alarming and reflect an ongoing issue within European football, which continues to struggle with racism and discrimination.
Juventus voiced their strong condemnation of the incident, emphasizing their commitment to address such behavior: “Juventus strongly condemns this incident and any form of racism and will ensure full cooperation with the sporting justice authorities to identify those responsible.” This type of public stance is essential in the fight against racism in sports, where every player’s dignity and respect should be upheld.
McKennie, who joined Juventus in 2020, has unfortunately faced similar situations before. Back in 2019, while playing against Fiorentina, he was also subjected to racial chants, leading to repercussions for the club and a suspended partial stadium ban aimed at curbing racist behavior. Yet, despite these measures, incidents of racism persist, with recent reports highlighting the extensive nature of the problem. Just weeks before McKennie’s experience, Schalke’s Christopher Antwi-Adjei reported racial abuse during a cup game against Lokomotive Leipzig, and a substitute from Kaiserslautern faced similar harassment while warming up against RSV Eintracht.
The issue isn’t limited to Italy. In England, the urgency to tackle these incidents was highlighted when UK police arrested a man following a complaint from Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo about racial abuse during a Premier League match against Liverpool.
