Albertin Montoya, who made history as the first head coach of Bay FC, has decided to step down from his position at the conclusion of the 2025 National Women’s Soccer League season. This announcement came just a day after the team faced its fourth consecutive loss, falling to the Kansas City Current.

In a significant shift for the club, Bay FC has appointed Kay Cossington to spearhead their sporting initiatives moving forward. This includes the crucial task of selecting Montoya’s successor. Cossington is already collaborating with Sporting Director Matt Potter and the rest of the training staff to guide the club into its next chapter.

This season, Bay FC has not had the results they were hoping for, currently posting a record of 4 wins, 5 draws, and 10 losses, placing them in 12th on the league table. It’s a tough position for any team, and the challenges faced on the field can be disheartening for players and fans alike.

“I have so much love for these players, staff, and fans,” Montoya shared in a recent team press release. “We’ve built a culture and a style of play that I believe will compete for championships for years to come. I want to thank everyone at the Bay FC organization for their support. I look forward to finishing this season strong and for this club to continue accomplishing great things.”

Montoya’s time at the helm has not been without its controversies. After guiding Bay FC to a playoff berth in its inaugural season, he faced allegations of fostering a toxic environment. However, an independent investigation cleared him of any misconduct related to the NWSL’s anti-harassment, discrimination, and bullying policy, allowing him to move forward with a sense of vindication.

Before taking the reins at Bay FC, Montoya also served as an interim coach for the Washington Spirit in 2022 and directed the U.S. Women’s National U-17 team from 2011 to 2012. His extensive experience in women’s soccer is an asset that many in the industry respect.

On the other hand, Cossington comes to the forefront with a wealth of experience, having previously been the first Women’s Technical Director at the England Football Association. Now, as the CEO of Bay Collective—a group dedicated to advancing women’s soccer—she expresses her vision for Bay FC. “Thanks to Albertin and the sporting staff’s efforts, Bay FC has established a strong foundation on the pitch, and I’m excited to help elevate the club further and put Bay FC in the best position to compete at the highest level for years to come,” she stated, showcasing her commitment to the sport.

Looking ahead, Bay FC will face the Orlando Pride on September 13. For the players, staff, and fans, this match is not just another game; it’s a chance to rally together and show their resilience. As the team navigates these transitions, there’s hope that they can tap into the spirit of their community and strive for better outcomes on the field.
